When
choosing which natural stone for flooring the question of limestone or
travertine has come up once or twice.
One thing that is best to do before choosing is doing your research on
each, figuring out their advantages and disadvantages and seeing which one best
fits your needs where you plan to have them installed.
When figuring out the differences and
pros and cons of each stone, one interesting tidbit is that travertine is a
form of limestone. Limestone is a sedimentary
rock that is composed of calcium carbonate fossils that is held together by
dissolved minerals. It is most commonly
found to form at the bottom of lakes and oceans.
Though travertine is a form of
limestone, it is created differently. It
forms when hot water from geysers or mineral springs percolates up through the
limestone. It brings a layer of
dissolved minerals to the surface of the limestone, thus making travertine.
Due to travertine being more porous it
must be filled with resin routinely. It
is very resistant to scratching, heat, and staining. It is also available in different colors,
usually beige, tan, or cream, that contain swirling patterns.
Limestone is mainly found in cream,
tan, brown, or a soft beige and either polished or natural. It is not as porous as travertine, so it does
not need to be filled by resin when installing.
It is very heat-resistant and low maintenance on cleaning.
There are several advantages that
limestone has over travertine to consider when trying to decide between the two
stones. When comparing the pricing for
each, travertine will generally win every time, but remember the saying “you
get what you pay for.”
Limestone itself is a much lower
maintenance and longer lasting of the two stones. It has a much more popular creative or
aesthetic appearance and is a much better long term investment.
When it comes to why limestone is has
a much longer lifespan and lower maintenance than travertine is mainly due to
the resin. Over time the resin will pull
away from the tile, especially if there is heating installed beneath the tiles.
When that happens, this can cause some
long term problems. Needing to have it
replaced, which takes time and money is needed to help maintain the
travertine. Which is why limestone is
considered to be longer lasting and lower maintenance than travertine. Installing limestone also helps raise the
value of your home as well.
One of the final reasons, the
popularity of its natural beauty that brings warmth and lightness into any
room. Travertine is a naturally darker
stone, which makes it a big tougher to bring the same lightness and warmth into
any room it is installed in.
All in all, choosing between the two
mainly falls on which is what you are looking for in the area that you plan to
install either in. One may provide you
the need or want that you want to bring to the room while the other
cannot. Always research before deciding
when it comes to this costly of an investment.
