How to Polish Limestone Floor Tiles

Limestone is known to be a sedimentary rock that has a smooth and granular surface that has various hardness.  You will find that it is mostly used for floors, countertops, and other tiled surfaces such as bathrooms or fireplaces.

The color choices that it comes in usually range from brown, gray, yellow, white, and black.  It can be easily polished like all other natural stones, but you can never get the shine such as marble or granite.  The polishing process takes much less effort than marble or granite does.

When polishing limestone, the more its natural features come out.  Though you may polish the limestone, it will still need its regular cleaning and maintenance.

Though it is highly recommended to have a professional polish your limestone tile flooring, you can do it as a DIY project if you were able to obtain these supples:

  • pH-neutral stone cleaner
  • Mop
  • Bucket of water
  • Hand polisher, 7-inch variable with speeds between 600-3000 rpm.
  • 3000-grit diamond pad
  • 11000-grit diamond pad

  1. First thing that you need to do is with a clean, soft, and non-treated dust mop clean up all the dust, dirt, and debris.
  2. Next you will need to do is clean the surface of your limestone tile floors with a pH-neutral stone cleaner mixed with warm water and a sponge or soft mop.
  3. Now you will use the polisher, set on low, and wish a 3000-grit diamond pad start the polishing process on the surface of the limestone.
  4. You will move the polished in an oval or egg shape pattern going counterclockwise for between 15 to 30 seconds.
  5. After that, check and see if the polish is at the desired level that you wish.
  6. If need be, repeat the process a few more times until you have reached the desired polished.
  7. Throughout this process you need to make sure that you have kept the limestone slightly wet.
  8. Polish all of the limestone surface, make sure to overlap in sections around 4 to 6 inches.
  9. You will now need to remove the 3000-grit, make sure to rinse it clean with water.
  10. With clean, warm water rinse the surface of the limestone as well with a mop.
  11. Now you will need to use a 11000-grit diamond pad, attach it to the polisher and repeat the process of step 3 through 8.
  12. Once you have completed this, remove the 11000-grit pad and rinse and allow it to dry as well.
  13. Make sure to rinse the surface again with clean, warm water with a mop and allow it to air dry.
  14. The final step is to make sure to reseal the limestone tile flooring.

It is always best to make sure that if you are not confident in completely this process on your own, that you hire a professional who can, and if any problems arise, they have the knowledge base to know a solution.
