Having a polished marble floor adds beauty and elegance to any room.  Marble flooring is durable, hard, and can last forever, but its beauty and lifespan can be marred by stains, abrasions, and chemicals.  Thankfully, having properly maintenance and care done to your marble flooring can prevent this.

What can cause damages to your marble floors?  Dirt or debris that is carried in on the bottom of your shoes and furniture can cause scratches and damage to the surface of your marble floors if scraped across.  Differently types of liquids or foods can cause damage to the surface of your marble floors.

Etching can happen, where it dulls the polish on the surface, from liquids or foods that are acidic in substance, which can only be removed by polishing.  Chemicals that contain acid can do the same.

Unsealed marble flooring can be harmed by tap water, which contains salts, potassium, chlorine, magnesium, and other minerals.  These can cause pitting, yellowing, and spalling on the surface of your marble floors.

There is a proper way clean your marble floors, and helps prevent any damage from happening.  Simply, follow these steps.

Once or twice a week, sweep your marble flooring with dry, non-treated dust mop.  This will help pick up any dirt and debris that can causes scratching on the surface.  Make sure to run the dust mop in a single direction and not a back and forth motion.

Next, damp mopping your marble floors with a microfiber mop.  This will help remove dirt and soil that are not picked up by the dust mopping.  It is best to use a neutral based cleaner mixed with either cold or warm water.  It is best to make sure that you rinse and wring the mop out as often as possible, this way you will not be pushing dirty around the floor.

Make sure that dry up any lingering water with a clean, soft cloth.  Leaving water can soak into the marble and cause it to slowly deteriorate and cause further damage.

After this, it is best to test and make sure that you do not need to reseal your marble flooring.  This should only need to be done every few years, though that depends on the foot traffic and use.  Ways to prevent needing to do this is by laying a doormat, runner, or area rug to help protect the marble.  Also, placing a pad under your furniture can also help protect your marble flooring.

Resealing your marble floors is important because this protects your marble from exposure to moisture.  It helps protect against stains and etching as well.  This is always best done by a professional as they being knowledgeable on which sealant to use and the proper way to apply it.
