Limestone Floor Cleaning Houston

When choosing the type of stone you wish to install in your home for flooring, choosing Limestone is a great choice.  Not only, if properly maintenance and cared for, limestone can last a long time, but it also brings beauty and elegance into your home with the variety of colors and textures.

Limestone is part of the stone family that is mostly made up of a chemical compound of calcium carbonate.  This means that when cleaning, you need to be aware of how sensitive limestone is to acid and acid-based solutions.  Even natural cleaners that contain vinegar are to be avoided.

It is not recommended to install limestone in places that lots of liquid can end up on its surface such as kitchens or bathrooms.  Liquid quickly seeps into the limestone and can cause staining as well as potential deterioration over the years.  So if anything ever spills on your limestone, especially one that is an acidic base such as soda, coffee, or wine, it needs to be blotted, not wiped, immediately with a soft, clean cloth.

It is important to make sure to regularly sweep, either by using a very soft bristle broom or dry, non-treated dust mop.  This is to prevent any buildup or dirt, dust, or debris that can scratch the surface of your limestone and make it more vulnerable to more damage.

Using a microfiber mop and lukewarm water, mop your limestone floors.  Make sure that the mop is well-wrung and try to use a little water as possible.  It is best to try and do this weekly, and to dry the surface once finished so you do not leave any excess water behind.

If you feel that the floor needs a little deeper clean, you can add a neutral cleaner or an alkaline one that is specifically for limestone.  Just make sure to go back over with a clean microfiber mop to “rinse” the floor of the cleaner so it does not leave a soap film behind that can cause damage to the limestone.

When you are finished cleaning, it is best to check and see if it is time to reseal your limestone floor.  The best ways to test this is by dropping a single drop of water on the surface and see if leaves a dark spot or soaks into the stone.  If it soaks into the stone, it is time to reseal your limestone.  This is typically done the first time at installation and needs to be redone every few years, depending on the foot traffic and use.

Sealing and waxing is done to help protect the surface of your limestone from stains that can be caused from liquids spilling on the surface.  This generally will wear away little by little over the years from cleaning, foot traffic, and use.  Resealing will help not only keep your limestone floor in great condition, but will also help the stone live up to its full lifespan.
